Here’s a recall you don’t see every day, and this one doesn’t affect a specific vehicle, but brake fluid.
In late April, General Motors issued a safety recall notice to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) over certain ACDelco GMW DOT 3 brake and clutch fluid lots that may be contaminated. This follows the safety agency reaching out to the automaker in August 2025, informing GM that certain fluid manufactured in 2022 failed compliance testing.
GM investigated the issue over the intervening months, during which it says there were no relevant warranty claims concerning the subject brake fluid. Nevertheless, supplemental testing by the NHTSA revealed the brake fluid failed federal safety standard (FMVSS) parameters due to the “presence of visible sediment”. Chemical analysis by the supplier confirmed the sediment in the contaminated samples came is precipitate from additives inside the brake fluid itself, and not external contamination from other particles somehow getting into the sealed bottles.
It is still unclear how the particles ended up in the final production brake/clutch fluid that was shipped out to dealers and purchasers. Any unwanted particles are typically filtered out as part of the manufacturing process before the fluid is bottled.
General Motors decided to recall the 2022 production lot — some 40,440 containers in total — to address the issue and take affected fluid out of circulation. The overriding concern is that sediment within the brake fluid can cause performance issues, degrading overall braking action that could increase the risk of a crash.
The automaker plans to reimburse dealers and ACDelco’s direct purchasers for the contaminated fluid. Dealers were notified about the contaminated fluid lots on May 6, while the company plans to notify other direct purchasers on June 8. Because this fluid batch (01977 091222) was sold as replacement brake and clutch fluid through GM’s own supply channels to dealers and ACDelco direct buyers, the company is not reimbursing consumers for the issue directly. Since there haven’t been any warranty claims directly related to issues with the fluid, there is also no mention replacing potentially contaminated fluid that ended up in customer vehicles. Still, if you did purchase ACDelco brake fluid manufactured in that 2022 time frame or had brake fluid changed through your dealer, it probably wouldn’t hurt to double check the lot information.
